This Weekend in San Luis Obispo, Sip and Save the Waves

Chamisal and Malene Wines partner with SLO County to preserve coastlines and surf breaks.

Founded in 2001 by photographer and surfer Will Henry, the Save the Waves coalition is committed to saving coastlines and surf breaks around the world. Working in tandem with community activists, Save the Waves seeks to both educate and advocate for threatened coastal environments. This summer, they’re partnering with Chamisal and Malene Wines in scenic San Luis Obispo County for the inaugural Save the Waves Film Festival on Saturday, August 10.

Chamisal Vineyards and Malene Wines will have a selection of their award-winning Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and rosés available for purchase at the event with 10 percent of all proceeds benefitting Save the Waves.

“The Edna Valley AVA is, in many ways, defined by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, which is only five miles away, so it’s important for us to take steps to protect this resource,” said Fintan du Fresne, winemaker for both Chamisal Vineyards and Malene Wines. “Sustainability is one of our guiding principles in the vineyards and the winery so we are thrilled to support Save the Waves and the organization’s conservancy efforts.”

Guests attending the event will enjoy a sunset reception in the vineyards followed by world premieres of surf, adventure and documentary films, as well as a raffle at intermission benefiting the Save the Waves Film Festival. Guests are asked to bring their own reusable glassware to eliminate single-use plastic cups, and those who purchase one of STWFF’s “Klean Kanteens,” limited edition film festival stainless steel pint cups will receive a complimentary glass of wine.

Did someone say road-trip for a cause? Plentiful accommodations are available in nearby Pismo or Shell Beach, with San Luis Obispo just a stone’s throw up the 101. Come sip some world-class wines while helping to save some of the Earth’s most precious waves.

Tickets available here.
